Overview:

Network Attached Cameras and Video Encoders (or video servers) attach to the network just like a computer. They use an IP address and can be viewed by a web browser. Add powerful Video Management Software (or IP video recording software) and you can create a sophisticated IP camera surveillance system. As an alternative you can use a complete NVR systems that bundles the computer and software into one easy to use package.

Network Cameras are much easier to install then the older analog CCTV cameras. The cameras are all connected to the network using standard CAT5 or CAT6 network cable and are powered using Power over Ethernet (PoE). Many manufacturers now provide outdoor ready cameras including PTZ cameras that are powered by PoE. For a complete review of the differences between the older analog CFCTV cameras and the new IP cameras take a look at our article "IP Surveillance Systems compared to CCTV Systems ".
